Anyone who has ever owned a boat, or has been only one who knows that there are many sailors that the basic skills, lack of seamanship, the safe operation of their craft. Why is this is the case, and what can be done to solve it?
The fact is that everyone who lives in New York with a checkbook can buy a boat and sail into the sunset, without even a how-to booklet. This is not the case, but in Connecticut and New Jersey, because both states require mandatory education for allPotential for boaters. The question we must ask ourselves is ...
Become a New York State Boating License Will in the foreseeable future need?
The majority of the sailors think so, and apparently the Coast Guard that too. In a recent interview with Rear Admiral David P. Pekoske, Deputy Commander for Operations, stated United States Coast Guard Rear Admiral Pekoske that contains The Coast Guard's latest proposal on this subject now:
A form of government issued photo identification, whichcan be a photo ID issued by a state (for example) a motor vehicle driver's license. We do not propose to issue a federal boater ID card.
AND
Satisfactory completion of a NASBLA approved boat operator course or written test that meets the minimum requirements equivalent national standards of boat operator education.
Is it enough? Well, it's a start. As many know, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) has quite a lotthe minimum standards when it comes to Boating Education. However, these standards are too low to qualify a new boater? As one local said Captain "in depth and hands on training is a must for boaters, if we are to preserve the security of our waters." This feeling was more of Boating Safety Instructors in the various states and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadrons echo that we interviewed. All believe that some form of training is needed on the waterand is the best way to qualify the competency of a new circular saw.
If you happen to be a written / road test to drive a car, why should not the same as someone who expected to pilot a boat? The safety of our families and fellow boaters depend on the expertise of our fellow boaters. What do you think? Let us know.
